Design advice

Before the paper arrives.

Plain answers to the questions we hear most, from how much paper a room needs to whether new paper can go over old.

Walls

Why walls need prep before paper goes up.

Paper shows every flaw beneath it and bonds to whatever it touches. Fresh drywall, glossy paint and old adhesive each need a different primer. A sized wall also lets the paper release cleanly when it is time for a change, instead of taking the drywall face with it.

Can new wallpaper go over old?Rarely. Old seams telegraph through and old adhesive fails unpredictably. We strip and re-prime.
How much paper does my room need?Measure the perimeter and height, then add the pattern repeat. Send us the room dimensions and the paper’s repeat and we will calculate it.
Which papers suit a bathroom?Vinyls and non-wovens handle humidity well. Grasscloth and hand-printed papers belong in powder rooms, not steamy baths.
Materials

Each material behaves differently.

Non-woven papers are forgiving and strippable. Vinyls are tough and wipeable. Grasscloth shows its seams by design and shifts in colour from panel to panel. Murals are printed to the wall and allow no error in layout. Hand-printed papers are expensive and unrepeatable, so we test every roll before it is cut.

Tell us what you are considering and we will say honestly how it will hang and wear in your room.

Living with paper

Caring for a papered room.

CleaningDust with a soft cloth. Wipe vinyls with a damp cloth and mild soap; never scrub grasscloth or hand-prints.
Sun and steamKeep direct sun off hand-printed papers and run the fan in a papered bath.
RepairsKeep a spare roll. Small damage can be patched invisibly if the paper is on hand.
Later changesA properly sized wall lets the paper come down cleanly, ready for the next one.
